THE CITY AND
COUNTRY

THE COUNTRY: MEXICO
Although a strong religious and macho culture
is still in place in Mexico, you might be surprised to know
Mexico is remarkably GLBT-friendly!
Due to the fact that many states have passed
gay and lesbian anti-discrimination laws, a lot of things have
changed, particularly in the recent years. Nearby Mexico City is
now also the first place in Latin America where gay marriages
are possible and where gay couples can adopt children.
But Mexico is more; it is also the place of
exceptional historical and cultural places to visit such as
Teotihuacán ruins and the colonial cities of Puebla, Oaxaca,
Taxco, Guanajuato and Querétaro.

THE CITY: CUERNAVACA
Let's avoid creating false expectations;
Cuernavaca is mainly a weekend resort, where the year-long
springlike weather (320 days of sunshine, and a stable average
temperature of around 77°F/25°C all year long) is perfect for
relaxing, culture and gastronomy.
Although Cuernavaca does have a nightlife,
both straight and GLBT, it is certainly not as wild as the
nightlife found in Puerto Vallarta, Cancún, Mexico City or
Acapulco. However, Mexico City is only at a one-hour drive from
Cuernavaca and is certainly worth a visit if you want to get
involved in the nightlife scene. Acapulco is also nearby, around
3 ½ hours away by bus. We will be pleased to help you arrange a
weekend trip to these places.
Cuernavaca is, nevertheless, definitely the
place for good food and good drinking! It is the home of
exclusive places such as Las Mañanitas, Casa Hidalgo or Gaia,
but good food is also available at low-budget places such as Tía
Licha or downtown-located Los Arcos.
Culture and history are also nearby: the
cathedral (the 3rd oldest in America, completed in 1529), the
palace and museum of Cortez (the summer residence of the Spanish
conquistador), the murals of Diego Riviera....
Nearby you will find the pre-Hispanic sites
of Xochicalco, the colonial towns of Tepoztlán and Tlayacapan or
the ex-hacienda of Vista Hermosa, an impressive colonial
heritage.
